Boost your immune system with this delicious orange mango turmeric smoothie!
Normally I stick to green smoothies, but sometimes I like to switch things up! Like the other day, I made this smoothie with orange, frozen mango, fresh turmeric, a pinch of cayenne pepper and a good splash of oat milk.
I added a pinch of cayenne pepper, as I like this smoothie with a little bit of a kick to it. I also think it goes wonderfully well with the sweetness of the orange and the mango. Kinda breaks of the sweetness a bit.
This smoothie is beautiful to look at, tasty to drink AND good for you! This smoothie has loads of goodness in it, such as
Vitamin C: Needed for collagen production and the synthesis of connective tissue, which is important for wound healing. Also supports the immune system and works as a natural antioxidant.
Vitamin B1 (thiamine): Assists in the conversion of carbohydrates to energy for the body to utilise. Also important for nerve signalling!
Folate: Important for several processes in the body, such as for the production and maintenance of new cells in your body. It’s also a key player in the production of red blood cells, which transports oxygen from the lungs to all the cells in the body and help’s you stay energised and alert.
Vitamin A: Important to keep your immune system strong and healthy so it can fight infections. Also important for your eye health.
Fibre: Fibre is so good on so many levels. It can reduce cholesterol levels, keep your gut flora healthy by feeding the good bacteria and can help you to stay regular. Fibre also slows down the rate the food is absorbed, which will prevent you from getting blood sugar spikes and will help you to stay full for longer.
One of the reasons that I almost always choose a smoothie over a juice (especially if its a fruit based one!) is just because of the fibre content. If you want to have a fruity drink, go for a smoothie instead of a juice. A smoothie will have more fibre in it, and will benefit you more than a juice as mentioned above. Because when you drink a smoothie, you essentially drink the whole fruit, compared to if you drink orange juice, you’ll mainly only have the fruit juices.
Another great thing about this orange mango turmeric smoothie is that it has turmeric in it. Turmeric is this little wonderful root that’s been shown to have many positive health benefits! It may have some powerful anti-inflammatory properties, strong antioxidant activites (meaning it can protect your cells from damage), possibly prevent cancer and may also prevent alzheimers!
In this recipe I used oat milk, but feel free to use any milk that suits you the best! Add more milk if you wish for desired consistency. I like mine to be quite thick, but if you want it more loose, add more milk!
Orange Mango Turmeric Smoothie
- 2 oranges peeled
- 150 g / 1.5 cup frozen mango
- 0.5 inch turmeric peeled and chopped into smaller pieces
- 1 cup oat milk or milk of your choice
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- Chuck all ingredients in a high speed blender.
- Blend until smooth.
